多摩美術大学校友会ニューヨーククラブは、来る9月18日より、天理ギャラリーにおいて展覧会　「ホーム・アウェイ・ホーム～多摩美術大学校友会ニューヨーククラブ」（以下HAFH展）を開催致します。多摩美術大学校友会ニューヨーククラブは2003年に発足し、今年で10周年を迎えました。会員はトライステイトエリア在住者を中心に、日本からの加入者も含め約80名を数えています。本展には、その内26名が参加します。「Home Away From Home」は、「故郷を離れた故郷」という意味です。このタイトルには二つの意図が込められています。一つ目は、故郷から離れた生活は、私達が後にしてきた「日本」をことさら意識させ、アイデンティティを自覚すること。もう一つは、ニューヨークという世界のアートマーケットの中心での研鑽がもたらす、自らの殻を破るような、創造の成果の発表を目指すことです。 HAFH展は、2004年から始まり、今回で9回目。本展は毎年、幅広い年代のアーティストが集まり、統一された作風ではなく、個々それぞれの表現方法と感性を持った個性溢れる作品展です。本展は9回目に至るまで、チェルシーのギャラリー、ノースセーラムにあるハモンド美術館など様々な会場で開催され、出品者はその都度、多彩な試みを行って参りました。昨年より会場となった天理ギャラリーでも、その広いスペースと、高い天井が、出品者にさらなる挑戦の可能性を与えています。会場ではクラブの10年に渡る活動紹介も展示いたします。皆様のご来場を心よりお待ちしております。

We'd like to announce that "Home Away From Home Ⅸ” (HAFH Ⅸ), The Alumni Association of Tama Art University NY Club Exhibition, will be held September-30, 2013 at the TENRI Gallery (43A W 13th Street, New York, NY 11101)
TAMA Art University Alumni Association's NY Club was established in 2003. In 2013, we celebrate our tenth anniversary. We currently have a membership of nearly 80: mostly Tristate area residents plus some residents of Japan. 25 member artists will participate in this exhibition.
HAFH is an acronym of Home Away From Home. There are two meanings, two points to this title. The first is that living far away from home makes us more aware of Japan, where we came from, and conscious of our identity. The other is to present creations that break through our own barriers by making our efforts in New York, the center of the world’s art market.
The first HAFH Exhibition was in 2004; this is the ninth HAFH exhibition. HAFH has earned a top reputation as a fully fascinating exhibition where participating artists display their unique expressions and sensibilities.
It has been held in many locations, including galleries in Chelsea and the Hammond Museum in North Salem, New York. The exhibitors have tried various challenges each time. In the Tenri gallery, which became the exhibition place starting last year, their large space and high ceiling give exhibitors the possibility of a further challenge.
We will also exhibit our club's ten-year history on wall panels. All of us sincerely appreciate your attendance.

ニューヨーククラブ10年の歩み

多摩美術大学の同窓生で構成される会、「多摩美校友会ニューヨーククラブ」の歴史は2003年春に、マンハッタンの街角で中里斉、越光桂子、西川敏子が落ち合ったところから始まった。中里、西川は日本に本部を置く多摩美術大学校友会からNY支部を作らないかとそれぞれ打診を受けており、中里は越光に声を掛け、この度3人でNY支部結成の相談をするために集まったのだった。
　中里は1970年にグッゲンハイム美術館で行われた、コンテンポラリー・ジャパニーズ・アート展に作品が選ばれる等、アーティストとして活動し、ペンシルバニア大学の教授をしていた。当時NY日本人美術家協会会長をしていた越光は中里に講演を依頼したことがあったが、まだ彼と打ち解けて話をする間柄では無かった。一方、西川にとって越光は多摩美の学生時代から新制作協会展に最年少で出品するなど活動的だった憧れの先輩であり、卒業して何年もしてからニューヨークで巡り合うことになるとは思いもかけないことだった。
　　3人はその足でカフェに向かい、NYクラブ結成の話し合いをした。どのような会にしたいか、この地に校友会を開き何が出来るのか、若い卒業生に何を伝えられるのか。その後、志を同じにする者が一人、また一人と加わっていった。様々な理由から日本を離れ異国の地に集まった同窓生達、「ニューヨークに行かなければならない、生活は何とかなる」というオプティミズムに支えられたハングリー精神を持った面々は一同に集まっては時には明け方まで飲み明かした。
　クラブの正式の発足は2003年12月。初代会長は中里、副会長は越光と西川両名がなり、西川は事務局長も兼ねて、会員を募るためにニューヨーク在住の多摩美出身者達へ電話を架けた。その数は百名以上に上る。電話に出た相手の中には暖かい応答をしてくれる人もいれば、そうでない人もいた。それでも西川は電話を架け続け、中里邸で開かれた発足後初の会合では数十名もの人々が集まった。
　初期メンバーにはその後のニューヨーククラブを彩った個性豊かな面々が多い。その内の一人、池上美和は中里が多摩美の学生だった頃に学内で見知っていた一人である。池上は高級美容サロンの経営者として、ニューヨークで成功を収めていた。クールな風情に熱いハートを併せ持ったきっぷの良い女性である。
　中里が美術家、教育者としての立場から後輩の会員達の精神的支柱であったのに対し、池上はニューヨークのビジネスシーンを生き抜いて来た経験から、経営者を目指している会員や会社員をしている会員の相談に乗ったり、時には病気になった会員の枕元へ駆けつけたり、会のパーティーのために自宅を提供し、会員に料理を振舞ったりもした。
　ニューヨーククラブの展覧会名であるHAFHはHome Away From Homeの略であり、「故郷から離れた第二の故郷での表現」を指す。初めてのHAFH展は2004年10月に在ニューヨーク日本国総領事館で開催され、以後１年を除いて毎年行われている。
　第一回のHAFH展の案内文からは当時の意気込みが読み取れる。一部をここに抜粋する。
「”ニューヨークで制作する”ということの課題は大きく、それは心を極限まで挑発し続けます。この制作すると云う共通点を基に、昨年末、多摩美校友会支部ニューヨーククラブが発足されました。この「HAFH」展はその発足記念展です。多様なジャンル、異なった表現法の作品が互いの存在感を競い合う熱気のこもる会場となるでしょう。グループ展と云う場を通し相互の制作の視点を理解し合い、会場への来訪者のご批評を聞き、次への芸術思想の発展に寄与させよう、これがこの企画展の目的です。」
　クラブに様々な個性が集まるにつれ、意見の対立が起こるようになった。会長の中里へ真っ向から反対意見を述べる人々もいた。そのような時でも中里は「一人でも多くの参加者を歓迎する、参加者が増えることは我々の知ること、即ち、知識が増えることなのだから」という会発足時の姿勢を保ち、穏やかに会員達を見守っていた。
　中里は2007年まで会長を勤め、2008年からはダンボ地区を拠点に活動していた彫刻家の下次正一が会長となり、中里は請われて名誉会長として残ることとなった。下次が会長になって2年目に日本に帰国することになり、当時の副会長であり、ニュージャージーに拠点を置く版画家であった永野みきが会長代行を勤め、翌2010年からは永野が会長となった。
　この時期はクラブにとって、辛い喪失の日々でもあった。2009年暮れに池上が癌により亡くなった。彼女のサロンで開かれた偲ぶ会には200人を超える彼女の友人達や顧客達が集まり彼女を偲んだ。
　2010年7月17日に中里が自宅での事故により亡くなった。町田市立国際美術館での彼の個展[中里斉　モダニズム･ニューヨーク原風景＜＝＞町田]開催中のことだった。彼を偲ぶ会が日本では桜美林学園で行われ、NYでは彼のアトリエと、会員の渡辺啓子が創立者である、NY Cooギャラリーで行われた。　
　同年10月、パステル画家として認められていた星野晶子が交通事故により36歳の若さで亡くなった。彼女の最期の作品のタイトルは「Be Alive(生きる)」。その名の通り彼女の作品は今も生き続け、2013年7月には喜多方市美術館で追想展が開かれた。
　2011年8月には初期メンバーの一人である松窪英二が筋肉が麻痺していく病気のために亡くなった。松窪は思ったままを口にしても憎まれないという、愛すべき奇特な性格の持ち主であり、呼吸が止まる最期の瞬間まで生きるために奮闘した。
　これら痛ましい経験の数々は永野の会長としてのクラブ運営に大きな影響を及ぼした。「いつかやる」の「いつか」が必ず来るとは限らない。来年生きている保障は無いのだから、やる時を引き伸ばさないこと。やるなら「今だ」という姿勢である。
　永野の他者を暖かく受け入れる性格も反映して、クラブの活動の幅がこれまでになく広がった。HAFH展では表千家の師範を招いてのお茶会や、プロのバンドによるジャズコンサートを開催、小作品を販売して東北の被災地への義捐金集めもした。アーティストのアトリエ訪問やセミナーや美術館巡りもした。
　2013年、永野は中里が兼ねてより言っていた、「校友会では後継者を育てるのも大事なことだ」という言葉に従い、会長職を辞した。永野が会長時代に副会長と会計を兼任していた小倉千恵が第4代会長になり、現在に至る。

10 year history of New York Club

The Alumni Association of Tama Art University － New York Club had its beginning when Hitoshi Nakazato, Keiko Koshimitsu, and Toshiko Nishikawa casually met on a street in Manhattan in the spring of 2003. Nakazato and Nishikawa had been asked separately by The Alumni Association of Tama Art University based in Tokyo to establish a New York branch. Nakazato contacted Koshimitsu and the three got together to talk about its possible inception.
Koshimitsu and Nakazato were solid transplanted New Yorkers. Koshimitsu was serving as the president of the Japanese Artists Association of New York at the time and Nakazato’s work had been selected for the Contemporary Japanese Art exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum back in 1970, and he was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Although Koshimitsu had invited him to give a lecture at the association, she did not yet know him very well. To Nishikawa, Koshimitsu was ahead of her at Tamabi, and she admired her as the youngest artist to be selected by the juried Shinseisaku Art Association exhibition in Tokyo. Nishikawa never expected to meet up with Koshimitsu after graduating from Tamabi in New York.
The three artists went to a coffee shop and talked about establishing the New York branch: what kind of an organization it might be, what could be accomplished by doing so, what they could do for more recent graduates. After a while, the members join in, one by one. It was a group of individuals who’d made decisions for various reasons to leave Japan with a hungry spirit and a sense of optimism. The group got together over the months and the discussions went on late into the night.
The club, as it came to be called, was officially established in December 2003. Nakazato served as the first president, Koshimitsu and Nishikawa as co-vice presidents. Nishikawa also served as administrator and in this role she contacted over one hundred alumnus to solicit membership. Some responded kindly but others not so much so. But she persisted and at the time of the official establishment, dozens of alums gathered at Nakazato’s loft studio.
Miwa Ikegami was one of our unique early members. Nakazato knew her from the time that they attended Tamabi. Coming to New York, she’d become a successful entrepreneur as the owner of an upscale beauty salon. She was fashionable with a passionate heart, and her generosity was that of a worldly older sister.
Nakazato was our spiritual pillar supporting the members as an artist and educator. On the other hand, Ikegami advised members interested in starting businesses, or those who worked at companies, on how to survive in the New York business scene. She caringly visited a member who was hospitalized, opened up her loft to members and hosted many of our parties.
The name of our annual exhibition, HAFH, is short for Home Away From Home. It expresses our establishing a second home in the Greater New York City Area away from our homes in Japan. The first HAFH exhibition took place at the Consulate General of Japan in New York in October 2004. Since then, exhibitions have been held annually except for one year.
The press release of the first HAFH exhibition expresses our enthusiasm at that time. Here is an excerpt from it:
The challenge of creating in New York is a big one and it provokes us to the utmost limit. The Alumni Association of Tama Art University NY Club was based on the common objective of creating. HAFH is our founding exhibition. The art pieces of various genre and expression compete with each other for existence to create a space filled with energetic interaction. The goals of this group show are to allow mutual understanding of our creative processes, offer a forum to listen, interact with comments from visitors, and contribute to a higher level of creativity.
As more individuals got together, there were conflicts of opinion. Some people even openly opposed Nakazato. But Nakazato remained calm listening intelligently and generously welcoming as many people as those who wanted to join us. He said that additional members increase our knowledge base.
Nakazato served as president until 2007. In 2008, Shouichi Shimotsugu, a sculptor based in DUMBO became president. Nakazato was asked and accepted to be the honorary chairman. After two years, Shimotsugu returned to Japan and Miki Nagano who was vice president, and a print artist based in New Jersey, became acting president and then president in 2010.
We were then faced with a series of tragic losses. Ikegami succumbed to cancer and more than 200 customers and friends gathered for her memorial held at her salon. On July 17, 2010, Nakazato passed away from a domestic accident. This occurred during his solo show [NAKAZATO Hitoshi : New York/Machida － Line Outside/Black Rain] at the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts. Memorials were held at the J. F. Oberlin School in Tokyo, at his studio in New York, and at New York Coo Gallery founded by Keico Watanabe, a member of the NY Club.
In October of the same year, Akiko Hoshino, recognized as a pastel artist, died at the young age of 36 in a street accident. The title of her last piece was “Be Alive.” As the title suggest, her art works are still alive, and a retrospective exhibition was held at the Kitakata City Museum in July 2013.
Eiji Matsukubo, one of our earliest members, passed away from Lou Gehrig’s disease. Matsukubo was likable with a freewheeling personality, honestly sharing his thoughts, whatever came to mind. He fought to live until his last breath.
The sadness over the loss of these members greatly affected Nagano’s philosophy of operating the club: waiting for that someday to come may never come when there’s no guarantee that we’ll be alive tomorrow. Let’s not postpone what we can do right now.
Nagano’s open-mindedness and ability to incorporate new ideas encouraged a wider range of activities for the club. Our annual HAFH exhibitions came to include Japanese tea ceremony by an Omotesenke master, jazz concerts featuring professional musicians, and collecting donations for the Touhoku area hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, as well as visiting artists’ studios, seminars, and museum visits.
In 2013, Nagano stepped down following Nakazato’s words to nurture successors. Chie Ogura who was vice president and treasurer became the current president.
